getting started with custom tiddler fields

2 Questions:

I started going through this tutorial:

started_with_custom_tiddler_fields

but when I enter text into my field, it doesn't save when I
close the
tiddler edit mode
Q1: with the 2.4 version of TW, is there a different syntax
we have to
use?


Also, looking at the tutorial, it appears that fields have
to be a
part of the visual element of a tiddler.
Q2: are fields designed to be used "invisibly" so
that you can write
to it and go get the value and manipulate it with various
ways but not
have to actually see the field there in a fixed layout?
