You seem to conclude that trackback != signedping. I
disagree.
I believe that "trackback" is best performed by
simply pushing
an
atom entry to a trackback URL. (At least a minimal
element
should
be provided and a signature would be optional but
recommended.) Thus,
from a
specification point of view, the only thing that
distinguishes a "ping"
from
a "trackback" is the address to which it is
delivered and how it is
processed by the receiver. The actual Ping and trackback
payloads that
are
generated as the result of a single publishing event might
differ in
their
content; however, their specification would/should be
identical.
If it is desirable to limit play-back then one could
include a
<link
rel="trackback-to" ..../> in the signed
content to indicate the target
URL
for the trackback. If one wishes to support user generated
"summaries"
of
original content, then the atom:summary field should be used
and
atom:content can be optionally omitted. If the intent is
only to do a
"pingback" without any content payload, then one
would simply exclude
both
atom:summary and atom:content but ensure that a minimal

element is
provided.
Note: This use of atom entries to accomplish a more
flexible
Pingback/Trackback facility was one of the motivators for
the source
element
in atom.
Given the above discussion, Trackback is simply a special
case
of
the more general case of pinging or "pushing"
content from one a
publisher
to a consumer/subscriber. As such, I would suggest that
there is a great
deal of overlap with pinging.
