When someone is completely new to something it is generally quite overwhelming to the
majority, I suppose those that those that seem to take to *nix like "a duck to water" don't
know what I am talking about, but there it is.

I am assuming you mean the boot prompt where you can modify the boot params, and if so
what is the nomenclature? I have ignored that feature for years though I think I have used it
once on a live cd where it spelled out the options to use.

Bob, being retired and sort of dinking around at home you should be able to get over the
learning curve I have yet to. If nothing else install virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org/)
on your windows install and install FreeBSD and others within that. I have found the
virtual drivers created by virtualbox sometimes help as well.

I'm afraid I do not know how to do the dmesg. I remember it had something

about DMA and unable to write to hard disk. I apologize for my ignorance.

Thanks again for your help.

Good afternoon ..

Have you tried the " ACPI disabled" boot option on the Freebsd boot menu ?

If so , what was the result ?

Exactly what drives are in the system ?

If there are no SATA drives in the system , disable the SATA controller in
the bios and try it again ..

I have a new homebuilt computer that I want use as a server for my home
email and website.

I have an AMD-64 Athlon with 2Gb of memory. I have 2 IDE drives and 2 SATA
drives.

I am unable to install FREEBSD unless I boot up in safe mode. Once
installed, I am unable to run it unless I boot up in safe mode. The problem
seems to be that it cannot write to the first IDE drive unless in safe mode.

I tried installing and running the trial 64-bit version of Windows Small
Business Server to see what happened. It installed and ran fine but I

refuse to use it.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.

Good evening .

What version of Freebsd are you using ?
Are you using the "i386" or "amd64" set ?
What is the model of the motherboard ?
And ...

Can you attach the output from dmesg ??

Tim,

After reading some articles on keeping FreeBSD patched and up-to-date and
considering the problem I am having with the installation, I guess I will
have to go to the MS Windows server even if I do dislike MS.

Even though I have spent 40+ years in IT, I'm just not sure I can get it set
up as I want it. I wish there was someone in the Greensboro area that I
could hire at a price I could afford to help me get it started but I can't
seem to find one.

I appreciate your efforts to help me.

Thanks

Boob ? that was a typo but maybe accurate

Bob

Good afternoon ..

FreeBSD is not for the self defeated ..

Sure it requires a little effort , but like anything worth having , IT IS
WORTH IT ..

You can do this .. You survived 40 years in IT ....

Over the lifetime of the box , FreeBSD will generate substantially less pain
than a win box ..

But you need to do the foot work ..

Have you googled "FreeBSD" and "M2N-E SLI" ??
Did you see the interupt storm and workarounds ??
Did you try anything from my last post ??
