no sound on XMMS

Please be more thorough when asking for assistance; namely
include 
details such as:

1) Whether sound is only inaudible when you use XMMS;
2) Whether your volumes are set to sane levels (we can get a
good idea 
when you attach the output from ``amixer'');
3) Whether you dist-upgraded from an earlier stable release
of Ubuntu.
