No audio since 2.6.20-14

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

In one out of five boots, I get working sound output. As
soon as I touch
a mixer the output vanishes.

This is on a Samsung Q35 notebook - sound worked fine with
2.6.20-13
kernels.

I don't have asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc.
