"BOF" : what does it stand for ?

Hi,

Subject says it all

I always run into this little acronym, often on the Ubuntu
wiki, but
it's been some time now and I still haven't figured it out
precisely, so
I thought I would ask !

I feel it's something like a sort of feature spec or
something, but I
fail to grab the exact meaning of it.

TIA !

Regards,

hmm lets see.. wikipedia says:
    * Birds of a Feather
    * beginning of file
    * Baptism of Fire
    * Board of Finance

(it also says a few others but I figured they don't fit too
well :-P)

Can you put the use of BOF in context?

Doesn't sound to be related.....

Yep sure. The last time I came across it was 30 minutes ago,
when I saw
a post on the ubuntu mailing lists talking about a better
integration
of the ubuntu forum, whick linked to this page on the ubuntu
wiki:

https://wiki
.ubuntu.com/ForumIntegration

Scroll down a bit, you will see a section called
"BoF agenda and discussion" It's interesting
because it says "BoF" not
BOF", so at least I assume that the middle 'o'
stands for "of", rather
than being a noun like B and F probably are.

That's the correct one. Connecting to the discussions that
makes the
spec. The idea is the Feather and the spec is the Bird.

Convention jargon for Birds of a Feather? (Meaning a meeting
for a
like minded sub-group of the convention)
Most appropriate if it got its start at Audobon Society
meetings, but
sci-fi cons predate the internet, and I heard it first
there.

There is a metaphor there, but this is not the correct one. It's an english expression meaning people of the same ilk. It derives from the expression "birds of a feather stick together" which means that similar types of people will congregate in the same places and support each other, often used by observers to explain or excuse the company someone keeps.

IMHO this comes from tech conferences which have
presentations all
day, then a few informal get-togethers known as BoFs where
people can
discuss common topics in a less structured way. Ubuntu
gatherings seem
to be light on the presentations and heavy on the BoFs, so
while the
name has stuck the metaphor doesn't apply as much as it
originally
did...
