First of all there is a differentiation by the infection
vector:
Virus: attaches to an executable and is transmitted with it
Worm: self-spreading through security holes in server
software
Trojan: poses as a useful program
But there are also other categorizations, e.g.,
"spyware" comes from a
classification that is interested in the intent of the
malware. Spyware
can propagate as virus, worm, or trojan.
Adware is again different - it really is not malware but a
business
model, at least as long as the user can make an informed
decision.
