Sorry, but you're not here.  Americans couldn't care less
about Quebec
separatism.  When they think about it at all, it's
"Divide & conquer" -
they can only imagine a divided Canada benefits them.  It
was a low kick at
Canadian federalists.

At the risk of wading into yet another complete OT thread...

When de Gaulle made his statement international relations
were very
different. This was before the US had made real strides
towards
becoming a theocracy and before either country had started
paying
greater attention to the rest of the world.

I seem to recall a previous conversation in which you and I
