I'm a Ubuntu user since Hoary (April 2005), professional
Unix
(AIX/Solaris/FreeBSD/HPUx) user since 1996, software
develper fluent in
C++, C (application, client/server and TCP/IP protocol
development) and
not a total stranger to bash. I don't really know Python but
would like
to learn it.

If I wanted to actually start contributing to the Ubuntu
project, where
would i start? Where would I volunteer?

I think the best way to begin this kind of adventure is to find a pet project/package, and to provide patches. You may also contact people (like the maintainer) on IRC.

It';s a meritocraty, here. If you show you can do, you'll be asked to do other things.

Take a look at [0]; there's an awful lot you can do, but as
a technical
user, you're probably best off looking towards MOTU [1] and
bug triaging
[2].
