Everybody copies everybody in everything on this planet. As
they say,
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".
Software patents suck.
And I *love* how some many Linux users complain about
"oh it's so much
like Windows" (whatever it is at the time) but they
*don't* have that
complaint about their desktop. GNOME and KDE are popular
several reasons..
1. They *do* resemble what people are used to (Windows -
which makes
perfect sense).
2. Because of #1 they are relatively easy to learn.
On a related note, for all the MS-bashers out in the Linux
community (a
waste of time and energy better suited to promoting Linux,
btw) you'd
think you'd not find so many "Windows-like" themes
for GNOME and KDE.
The same people using those themes will tell you how they
hate MS, but
they will use next-to-identical clones of their UI (thanks
to themes).
Since GNOME and KDE were designed to be themeable that's
pretty easy to
accomplish and people do it all the time.
MS-bashers willingly use a desktop that took most of it's UI
from
Microsoft. GNOME and KDE have taskbars, "Start
Menus" and application
toolbars and menus that are very familiar to new users? Why
do you think
that is? It's because GNOME and KDE *borrowed* the idea from
someone
else. Who do you suppose that is? Hell SUSE (long before
Novell) even
puts the "My" on the Computer desktop icon.
And what is my reaction to all this?
I don't care. I don't care who came up with the idea
first. If it's
good and I like it, that's all that matters to me.
Everybody copies
everybody in this world (look at designs on cars and houses,
dishes, mp3
players, vacuum cleaners. You name it..
Yet the only imitation most people get upset about surrounds
software.
I don't get it...
