Hopefully, as a result of Sun's backing, they'll expand the
GPL-side
of VirtualBox to feature parity with the proprietary
version.

Sun sure is purchasing Linux related / open-source
companies. First
MySQL, now Innotek. Hmm...
I sure hope Sun improves the software it purchases. It would
be really
nice indeed if the expand the free (as in freedom)
VirtualBox.

Sun's Solaris/OpenSolaris is pretty much direct competition
for Linux
(consider Nexenta (http://en.wik
ipedia.org/wiki/Nexenta_OS) which is
Ubuntu Solaris rather than Ubuntu Linux , but
they're keeping it
friendly, playing nice with the GPL, etc. (Unlike
Microsoft, they
actually are competing based on merit O

Yes, I have heard of Nexenta. Although I though appreciate
that Sun is
playing nice with the GPL, my trust does not go very far
with Sun
(it's much better than Microsoft, however). In my opinion,
Sun's
problem is that they use the benefit of the open source
community and
then turn around if something (shortsightedly) looks better
for them.
While this may look like a good strategy, Sun loses the
trust of the
open source community.
Now, if OpenSolaris is released under GPLv3, Linux Torvalds
may
recommend Linux contributors to use the GPLv3 license (or at
least
GPLv2 or later).

I guess there are some pro & contra FLOSS streams inside
Sun.
Their CEO & some other key people say they're pro, but I
can imagine
some internal opposition and they also use some code that's
not their
propriety...

Purely GPLv3 linux contributions seems nearly impossible to
me, as it
would be incompatible with the GPLv2-only parts (I think,
IANAL).

The copyright holder for any given part can license it any
way they
like; e.g. while Linus' sections may be GPLv2-only right
now, he could
re/multi-license them as GPLv2 or later, GPLv2+3, etc. The
major
problem is that Linus does not hold the copyright for *all*
of Linux,
so its not entirely up to him; portions would have to be
rewritten if
GPLv2-only copyright holders don't want to change their
licensing.

Yeah, I'd like that too - used the OSE version until I needed USB support, then switched over to the non-gpl one.

I just got out of a conference of Sun in my college and
theres something
I can say about GPL and Sun.
The talked a lot about Solaris and Open Solaris and how
importand open
development is for them, they also talked about how a lot of
companies
make money by providing services like support and selling
hardware only.
they seem very focused in being an Open company.
Well thats just the impression I got.

I don't have any sort of priviledged inside scoop or anything, but I can tell you that myself and half a dozen other people are doing open source development (in my case, Drupal, for the rest, Wonderland) at my college, and our project (and thus our paychecks) are being financed in significant part by Sun. Wonderland is Sun's 3D virtual world software, and we're working on adding features useful to educational deployments. You can follow our project (and see my portion of the work evolve) at http://virtualnorthstar.org/ .
