I'll admit that I'm not a Marvel Comics fan (color me
Vertigo), but
this one's got me genuinely stumped: Iron Man is fighting
the dark
forces of Linux. That's direct from the writer's mouth, in
fact --
Matt Fraction (how's that for a great comic-book name?), the
fellow
scripting the new Invincible Iron Man series debuting next
month, had
this to say concerning arch-villain Zeke Stane to an
interviewer at
Comic Book Resources:

Zeke is a post-national business man and kind of an open
source
ideological terrorist... He has absolutely no loyalty to any
sort of
law, creed, or credo. He doesn't want to beat Tony Stark, he
wants to
make him obsolete. Windows wants to be on every computer
desktop in
the world, but Linux and Stane want to destroy the desktop.

Go ahead, make that make sense. (Heck, make that make for a
decent
comic book.) Stane's a security threat because he's running
Linux?
Stane's agenda is developed by a worldwide group of
evildoers? Stane
is remarkably virus-resistant but takes forever to whomp up
a driver?
Stane names his evil schemes things like "Garrulous
Giraffe?" What the
heck is Fraction trying to tell us here?!
---

Perhaps that he owns Microsoft stock? ;)

Grr... if anyone is looking to destroy "the
desktop", it's Microsoft.
They have become completely absorbed in the business corner
of things,
working towards whatever puts money in 'the market'. The
destruction
is seemingly unintentional in that case, so probably not a
good comic
book plot.
Anyhow, could be interesting to see how they expect to
defeat Linux -
a task which is taking Microsoft an eternity - within what
looks like
only a few issues. I also wonder why Iron Man cares about
pitiful
desktop computing....

What a mad plot. The Gnu/Linux villain (it sounds like)
could simply produce
the Kryptonite of the Big-O/S (TM) : shout, "Killall -9
*"

Feel free to embellish

This has actually drawn my curiousity now. Apparently the
comic has
interesting, unpredictable and convoluted storylines; the
comments to
the various articles there are rather informative. It's
suddenly
pretty likely to me that he will, by the end of this, be
painting free
software in a good light...

Best not leap to conclusions...
