Interesting anecdotal report on putting a nontechnical user
in front of Hardy:

There's a usability bug for the issues raised in the post:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubunt
u-meta/+bug/223436

The Transmission one might actually make it into Hardy.
(BitTorrent is
pretty darn mainstream, and labelling Transmission as
BitTorrent
should be enough for the n00b user IMO. "BitTorrent -
that's how you
get telly, isn't it?")

Except done by a non-professional and actually listened to!

(brainstorm.ubuntu.com is also a great place to hear out the ideas from "the" simple users)

Hi!
The problem with some of those problems is, that they are
not strictly
Ubuntu-related. Ubuntu can't force to change Transmission's
icon, or
to change stuff in pidgin. And another bunch of things are
more Gnome
related, I would say. I'd assume that every Gnome
distribution is
fighting with the "428.2 GB Media". I do agree
with the flash part. It
should be better incorporated into the desktop. Perhaps
similar to the
way restricted drivers are managed. So to write a
"Restricted Extras
Manager" or something in that general direction.
Also, I'm missing some consistency in the naming-scheme in
Gnome/Ubuntu's Gnome, or at least a way to change it. I,for
one, look
for programs and not for tasks (or is there a way to change
that
without changing every link in the menu?). In KDE, there is
a way to
switch between different the different formats...

BTW: My girlfriend enjoys her KUbuntu 7.04 and gets
everything done
she needs to.

Cheers

Oh, certainly. But ultimately, users don't and shouldn't
have to care
whether it's the distro or the upstream (or where in the
upstream).
Thankfully, Ubuntu has reasonable influence on upstream
(from being
nice to deal with, offering patches, etc.)

I suppose Canonical feels they're treading a fine line on
how well to
integrate the patent-encumbered stuff. But certainly the
free-as-in-beer stuff would be just fine from all legal
angles to
incorporate in such a manner (much as restricted wifi
drivers are).
