Hi John French!
Apparently you are able to boot live?
I have had problems with certian hard disk drives. The last
time I
had something like that happen it went away when I
reformatted the
disk using the Ultimate Boot CD utilities for the disk. It
needed a
fairly low level format.
Other than that, you may need to use the alternate CD and
turn off ACPI.
My two thoughts.
Good Hunting!

Ok, you should also Google "ACPI : Unable to locate
RSDP" or portions thereof.
