I'm using Dapper and am trying to get the hang of
BitTorrent. I've tried
a number of clients and yet my download speed seems to stay
around 15
kilobytes per second, yet my line speed is more like 200
kilobytes per
second (a 2 meg ADSL line).
I've set the port forwarding on my NAT router and opened
appropriate
holes in Firestarter. I can see uploads going and incoming
connections
on the BT ports (6881-6999). BitTornado reports is
connecting to 20
peers for one file!
What clients do others use? I've tried the gnome-btdownload
that comes
with Dapper, terminal based btdownload and I've installed
BtTornado, but
they all seem to behave the same.
I feel I'm missing some essential part of this jigsaw! Any
clues anyone?
Regards,
Tony.

I use azureus a lot -- I think it's in universe -- the app
has many
features, lots of which are probably overkill, but it's
worth a try.

I use Azureus too. I think it's in Metaverse, actually. My
experience is that the client doesn't make that big of a
difference in
download speeds. It all depends on how many people you are
connected
to and what their connections are like. 20 isn't all that
much, and
if a lot of those people aren't uploading to you pretty
quickly, then
15 kb/s seems pretty normal.

I use rtorrent, a C++ based terminal app that has a pretty
darned small
footprint. It is in universe, although I'm running off the
svn repository.
I have a "torrents" folder on my desktop I drag
the .torrent file into,
and rtorrent will automatically start downloading it into a
default
folder that I move it out of once its finnished. So
basically I run it
in a detached screen session and don't have to think about
it, while at
the same time not have java running on half my CPU.
rtorrent does not, however, support the encryption features
Azureus does.
Said encryption -might- help with your download speeds -
some ISPs are
known to throttle bittorrent traffic. The ethics of avoiding
this
throttling is a contentious issue, so I'll leave the
decision up to you.
Cheers.

Any clues anyone?
Hi,
I used to use Azureus (in Dapper), but it slowed down my
system (1 GHz
processor) pretty badly and I couldn't comfortabely use my
computer for
anything else while downloading. I use Bittornado now (in
Edgy), and
have had no problems with it.
I connect through a router, but haven't configured it in any
way because
I currently have only one PC on it. I also have no firewall.
Everything
has always worked out of the box and download speeds have
been good.
Regards,
Ari

Yes, it turns out my ISP (Pipex) throttles BT traffic to a
measly
20kB/s. Apparently they've been doing this since March 2006.
Pointless
as I all I'm doing now is downloading using HTTP and getting
full
bandwidth!
I'll look into encryption, but reading about it, there seems
to be
compatibility issues between clients, so I'm not sure it's
quite ready
yet.
Azureus, seems to be a heavy weight client, as many Java
apps are!
Regards,
Tony.

You may (depending on how sophisticated your ISP's traffic
management
is) be able to circumvent this restriction by not using the
default
ports and/or switching encryption on.

If you configure it, Azureus will attempt to start an
encypted
session, and if that's not possible, it will fall back to
unencrypted.

Another thing you can do is to throttle the upload speed. If
you
saturate the upload side of your connection, you will start
dropping
packets big time, and that will put your download speed in
the
toilet.

A lot of the BT clients *don't* use the official ports by
default.
Try passing them options/configs to use 6881-6999.

Thanks, but as I reported in an earlier message, the problem
is my ISP
who throttles BT traffic to about 20kB/s. I'm going to try
setting up a
VPN connection to work and see if that overcomes their
throttling.
Regards,
Tony.
