For the past 2 hours I've been trying to send messages and
replies to
the group and am getting this back on every message -
To: "Ubuntu User List" <ubuntu-users lists.ubuntu.com>
Subject: Wireless - Dapper
Sent: Sat Dec 30 07:55:43 2006
did not reach the following recipient(s):
peter gizmoman.net on Sat Dec 30 07:55:43 2006
The e-mail account does not exist at the organization
this message
was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the
recipient
directly to find out the correct address.
<beachbum-server.beach-bum-solutions.com #5.1.1>
This happens whether I am replying to a post, or starting a
new post.
Is anyone else seeing this???

Just got 2 more both sent to my home address. Is this some
sort of
attempt to build up a list for advertising purposes from
those who
bother to reply?

No, I think, as Derek suggested, it is just someone who
subscribed using an
address that has since become invalid - I expect it will
stop as soon as
the relevant admins fix it
The ones I am seeing are being tagged as spam by bogofilter
and dropped
into my spam directory, which suits me fine

It is odd that list users are receiving the message, as it's
something
that mailman should either handle itself by automatically
unsubbing
bounced addresses, or the notices should go to the list
admins only,
not the entire list.

Has anyone examined Received: headers to see how the
messages are
getting to you? Are they actually coming through the list,
or from
somewhere else?
As long as the server bouncing the messages respects the
Return-Path
header, and your messages are sent to the list only, you
shouldn't
see bounces. If you "CC to sender" or "reply
to all" by default you
might get a bounce also if the bogus address shows up in
almost any
header in the original. That's all determined by your mail
client. And
of course the server doing the bouncing could just be
broken.
It should be pretty easy to tell what's what from the
headers of one of
the bounced messages, but for some reason I'm not seeing any
of them....

This is the headers do they mean anything to you.

Only that my message got to you by way of the list.
Sorry, my bad... I meant one of the bounced messages itself.
The
headers from the actual error report will tell if that
message came
through the list, or direct from the offending server to
your account.
And the message that caused the bounce wouldn't hurt either.
It will
most likely confirm the suspicion that some list readers are
replying
to "all" and some are not. Those who reply to
addresses other than the
list itself are of course subject to the whims and faults of
whoever
they send messages to. Not much the list maintainers can do
about it.
That's why I reply *only* to the list. No CC's to the author
or
anything unless I say so specifically. Gotta love Claws-Mail
for that.
It's configurable to reply list-only by default, but the
options for
"all" and "author" are a drop down
selection in the composition
window.
I see you're using evolution... not to knock a fine piece of
software
or anything, but it being a "groupware" type
application I suspect it
will default to replying to every address it sees. It's been
ages since
I used it, but I remember it being funny that way. It use to
multi-post
Usenet messages (generate a separate message for each group)
rather than
cross post by putting all the group names in the Newsgroups
header of
a single post. It's a bit annoying to people who like to
read messages
only once. ;)

I only send to the list and reply to the list no copies or
cross
posting.
The header I sent was obtained from the bounced mail. Would
you like to
see the actual message received?

not sure why you are not recieving any of them, but they are
coming
directly from the beachbum-server and not following the
reply-to: but
the from: header, someone could notify the list admin to
remove
