Right-click on the panel, select "add to panel".
Then scroll down to
"Utilities" and drag and drop "Character
Palette" to the panel.

Having installed  this gnome panel applet, you can click on
its up-arrow
to select the row with the character you want. Click on the
character to
select it, and then paste it into your application.
