Several websites offer podcasts of various radio programs.
Most also have
downloadable software (for Windows, of course, and
frequently Mac OS) to
receive them.
Is there software available to receive these podcasts in
Linux? I see a couple
of possibilities in Synaptic, but the setup is not obvious
to me - even after
looking at the software.

I'll give you a quick how-to, based on the podcast reciever
I use
(iPodder), and one of the podcasts I listen to, Lugradio.
1) Install ipodder (Applications, Add/Remove, type ipodder
in the
search box. You may need universe and multiverse enabled.
Tick the box
next to it, then OK)
2) After installation is complete, go to the website of the
podcast
you wish to recieve. (In this example, lugradio.org) and
find the
feed. On lugradio.org, this is on the right navigation bar
("Podcast
feed"). I want the MP3s, so I click MP3. This links to
the RSS feed,
so we copy the URL from the location bar
(http://lugradio.org/
episodes.rss)
3) Open up ipodder (Applications, Sound and Video, iPodder)
4) On the "Subscriptions" tab, click the add new
feed button (White +
in a green circle)
5) Paste the URL from firefox into the URL box, then click
Save.
6) Hit the big green "check for new podcasts
button"
7) After each episode finishes downloading, click the green
symbol
next to it to listen to it in XMMS. (You may need to install
this if
you don't already have it)
Sorry if this comes across as a bit dumbed-down, I'd rather
oversimplify than overcomplicate.

Rhythmbox is supposed to be able to handle podcasts, but
I've never used
it for that. Podracer is in the repo, and I am actually the
lead
developer, but its bittorrent code is borrowed and I never
could figure
out how to get it to work with all versions, so the entire
project has
pretty much fallen into disrepair. For a command line
program or one
that can run in the background from a cron job I would
personally
recommend peapod. Unfortunately it isn't yet in the repos,
but you can
find it at
http://www.peapodpy.org
It works with http and bittorrent downloads and seems to be
fine with
whatever version of bittorrent is on your system. I am
basically passing
the torch to the peapod developers and hope to maybe
contribute to their
code in the future. Besides, Python is much better than Bash
for that
sort of thing anyway. :P and it will be much easier to write
a graphical
front-end to Peapod for those who like that kind of thing
for podcast
reception than for Podracer, since Peapod is written in
Python.
If you are looking for a strictly graphical podcast
receiver, the
choices look rather confusing to me at this time. There used
to be a
package called IPodder, but it was apparently removed for
legal reasons,
and there is apparently some confusion as far as which
package was
supposed to replace it in Ubuntu. There was a bug filed
about this, but
I don't see a resolution other than dropping IPodder from
the repo.
There was mention in that bug of 2 different replacements,
(CastPodder
[1] which seems to be dead, and PodNova [2] which seems now
to be a
podcast search site rather than software), and there is no
package by
either name in Ubuntu Feisty at this time.
[1] http://www.castpodder.net
a>
[2] http://www.podnova.com
Maybe someone else can shed a little more light on the
graphical aspect,
since I have only received podcasts via a cron job or by
manually typing
in a command.

Rhythmbox (might be Music Player in the menus) has the
ablility to
grab podcasts. I'm at work right now, so if you're
interested I can
detail the steps to subscribe this evening (EDT).

I've tried out most of the various iPod software out there,
have
settled on Amarok as best able to manage podcasts. They get
listed in
the Playlists section, easy to add to them, manage them,
transfer them
to your iPod. I had hoped to use RythmBox for this as I run
Gnome and
didn't want the KDE overhead needed for Amarok, but podcast
management
wasn't nearly as good and I ended up with about 1 GB of
orphaned files
on my nano as a result of deleting podcasts using RythmBox.
Luckily
Amarok has some good iPod tools for cleanup built in.
If anyone else has a better Gnome based app I'd like to hear
about it.

Does Exale do podcasts? It's supposed to be much like
amarok, but I have
used it very little so far.
Just a thought,

I don't know if it's Gnome-based, but has anyone tried a
newer
version of Yamipod?

YamiPod is independant, neither KDE nor Gnome - there is a 1
mb
libfmodex audio library to be added to /usr/lib, the
executable is 14
MB itself, no other installation required, dead nuts simple
to
install. It's a pretty good iPod manager, however it isn't a
music
manager like Amerok, RythmBox etc, capable of handling all
of your
music files as well, at least as far as I can see.

I like PenguinTV for this...

I like to use Listen. Easy to setup podcasts and great for
managing
music as well.
