I was hoping to try it as a last resport on a home page which displays tel. nos. in IE but not in Opera 9.01 build 8552.

Many thanks Ken and Sven! It had never occurred to me to right-click on the page...

Er, I hate to say this, but I have now discovered that in fact the site does seem to work fine in Opera - it just took me some time to understand an apparently meaningless hint and discover that you have to click somewhere near the visible text to activate "this control"!

I refer to www.timoderijk.nl , where when you do the necessary you get phone numbers etc. (Not that anyone seems to be picking up the phone...)

Cheers all,

Harry

I see now that my problem has been compounded by my assuming that I could set Mask as IE as a permanent setting, i.e. without having to be on a page. If you have a blank page, Edit site prefs is inactive. Some might say this is obvious. To me it isn't, though I can see the logic of it.

Thanks Malcolm!

I suspect that now the only way to do that is to edit a .ini
file.

opera6.ini contains:
...
[User Agent]
Spoof UserAgent ID=1
...

So I guess setting that to 5 would Mask as IE by default.

Site-specific preferences, are site specific. If you aren't
at a
site, you can't very well set your preferences for it, can
you?

However, that doesn't mean you can't change the default
setting
for that. There are a couple of ways you can do that. One is
to
add a button for selecting it to a toolbar. (Right-click on
the
toolbar, select "customize", go to the buttons
tab, then to
preferences and drag the appropriate button to the toolbar.)
Or
you can change it at opera:config. That setting is in the
User
Agent section. ("Opera:config" is typed in the
same way you'd
type a web site address.)

Ooo, yes, ta, I always forget opera:config - much easier
that edits to
opera6.ini!

I forgot the customise button too ... but does that alter
the default or
the site setting?

I would expect that it would alter the default if I put on
the main bar or
the personal bar but that it would alter the site
preferences if I put it
on the address bar (which is tab specific) but I may just be
expecting too
much

I don't see why not. Other site-specific preferences can be set in at least one menu in Opera when one is not at any site, so why not this?
