Question about Opera install directory on solaris and linux
user name

I am upgrading our Opera installations to v8.52 on linux
and solaris. Up until now, I have installed Opera in a
new directory everytime there is a new version, like this:

/public/shared/opera/opera-8.50/sparcsolaris/[bin,lib,share]
/public/shared/opera/opera-8.51/sparcsolaris/[bin,lib,share]
/public/shared/opera/opera-8.52/sparcsolaris/[bin,lib,share]
.
.
etc.

But now I just noticed that the installer for 8.52
suggests these paths to begin with:

Files will be installed as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
 Wrapper Script :
/public/shared/opera/opera-8.50/sparcsolaris/bin
 Binaries :
/public/shared/opera/opera-8.50/sparcsolaris/lib/opera/8.52-
20060201.1
 Plugins :
/public/shared/opera/opera-8.50/sparcsolaris/lib/opera/plugi
ns
 Shared files :
/public/shared/opera/opera-8.50/sparcsolaris/share/opera
 Documentation :
/public/shared/opera/opera-8.50/sparcsolaris/share/doc/opera
-----------------------------------------------------------

The "Binaries" path includes the version number
of Opera.
So my question is this:

Is it the intention that we install all versions of Opera
in the same directory, i.e. something like this:

 Wrapper Script : /public/shared/opera8/sparcsolaris/bin
 Binaries :
/public/shared/opera8/sparcsolaris/lib/opera/8.52-20060201.1
 Plugins :
/public/shared/opera8/sparcsolaris/lib/opera/plugins
 Shared files :
/public/shared/opera8/sparcsolaris/share/opera
 Documentation :
/public/shared/opera8/sparcsolaris/share/doc/opera

In other words, will the installer cleanly upgrade opera on
top
of a previous version?

With the version number included in the
"Binaries" path, it almost
seems like the intention is that one could run different
Opera
versions out of the same directory. Is that really the
intention?

What is the downside, if I just continue to install Opera
the way
I have done so far, i.e. pick a new install folder for each
version?

Help and advise will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, Opera will cleanly upgrade from one version to another,
without
losing any of your important settings *mail, bookmarks,
etc.*.

However, if you have customized any config files, sometimes
you will lose
them, so it's always a good idea to back up Opera's
directories before
installing a new version.

Oh, I forgot to add, I'm not really sure what the downside
is if you
continue what you've been doing, short of prehaps losing
some settings
every time you upgrade. I know you did in Windows whenever
you installed
Opera to a new directory, but I'm not sure about Linux.

Note that you only really need to take a backup of ~/.opera,
as that is
where all of the user's settings are stored.
