Actually, Russ knows what he is doing. He has switched his
whole office to
Asterisk and has the employee/boss home phones connected to
his own mini
telco that he has built. He has also managed/operated an
asterisk-based
predictive dialer for UDOT. I would say that qualifies him
to give some
advice.

Those who tout polycoms are either veterans of voip phones
or lucky. I have
tried them all and have a Noah's ark of phones right here by
my computer
(snom 360, linksys 942, cisco 7970, cisco 7960, polycom 601,
polycom 430,
aastra 480ict, etc. and have tried the grandstream) and have
to say that the
phone I prefer to talk on the most is the polycom. You are
welcome to swing
by sometime and make some calls on any one of them and see
what you like.

When I started kicking the tires I used a Grandstream
GXP2000 to start
with. It is easy to setup, and has pretty good quality
through the
handset, but the speakerphone is nearly useless, but you can
get that
warm fuzzy feeling that everything works. We now use the
Polycom
IP430's. Definitely a learning curve on the setup, but the
sound
quality is excellent, and the speakerphone is very good.
If you want to borrow a Grandstream or two for a couple of
weeks, I've
still got them. We'll use them eventually where we don't
need a
speakerphone, but that's probably a month or two away. If
you're ever
around Bountiful, I could give you a quick show and tell of
how I've
done things. (Probably not the right way, but it works....)

BTW, I was also at the last meeting..
