Location: University of Utah, Main Campus

Responsibilities:
Continuing Education at the University of Utah is looking
for a Java & 
Web Applications Developer for our RUReady program.  The
purpose of the 
RUReady program is to develop a new free online college
readiness 
learning and self-assessment web site for students, and
provides 
formative assessment and student tracking information for
teachers. The 
site allows students unlimited access to engage in
low-stakes assessment 
tests in specific subject areas (Calculus, General
Chemistry, General 
Physics, and General Psychology) to gauge their own level of

preparedness to take large introductory college courses,
will generate 
individual and class-aggregated performance reports for
teachers.

The Java developer will review the current Java code design,
participate 
actively in writing the next software generation, fix bugs,
and design 
and write additional code to support large number of users
and deploy 
the web application on multiple servers. The developer will
also work 
with other team members to develop and maintain new teacher
tools, 
including on-line performance reports on their students.

Position Duties:
- Writes web application and stand-alone Java code for bug
fixes, code 
enhancement and code testing.
- Develops the teacher report system of the RUReady site.
- Enhances Website's performance for large numbers of users,
including 
application
- Deployment on multiple servers.
- Maintains the RUReady website.

Qualifications:
- At least a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science,
Mathematics or a 
related field.
- Five years of experience in Object-oriented Java (TM)
programming, 
including new Java 1.5+ features.
- Extensive experience with Java web applications (J2EE),
Servlets, JSP 
2.0, Struts 1.2+ with Tiles, Hibernate 3+, HTML form
processing, Apache 
Tomcat 5.5+.
- MySQL queries and proper database scheme design.
- Experience in developing under the MyEclipse 5.1 and/or
Eclipse 3.2+ IDE.
- Ability to properly design and improve large-scale
software in a 
time-intensive development environment (including
documentation), 
profile its performance and eliminate memory and execution
time 
bottlenecks for large number of users.
- Experience with developing web applications on multiple
servers, 
proper synchronization with a load-balancer and a database
server. 
Experience with MySQL database scheme design and processing
large data 
sets. - Experience with Linux/UNIX/Cygwin shell script
programming.
- Ability to work as an effective member of a team and meet
deadlines. - 
Working with a code repository software (e.g. Tortoise
subversion).

Preferences (Optional):
- Experience with Enterprise JavaBeans, shopping cart
applications, JSFs.

Work Schedule:
- Full-time position, 40 hours per week.
