My comments on CRT devices (TVs, monitors, etc.) were in
fact based on
devices that don't have the more energy-efficient
"idle" modes. Earlier
devices that were kept warm for an "instant-on"
feature [which energy-
efficient creatures don't have] sucked watts like syrup.
And were warm
to the touch, yes. As this was only a convenience for those
who waited
until the last minute to turn on "My Favorite
Martian" and "The Flying
Nun", I hope that nobody uses this any more.

Windows Media and mplayer plugin

I'm having a hard time with Windows Media (.wmv) streams
and the mplayer
plugin for Firefox 1.5 on Ubuntu Dapper. What I *can* do is
play the
whole stream from beginning to end. What I can *not* do is
move around
in the stream (no "slider" control comes up and
none of the secret
mplayer keyboard movement commands seem to work). I also
can *not* save
the stream to disk, even using the command-line
"streamdump" option in
mplayer. (If I *could* save the stream, I would probably
then be able
to play the disk file using some other player that would let
me move
around in it).

This issue (minor though it may seem) is becoming a
"deal killer" in my
attempt to migrate all my home computers to Linux. The kids
won't
tolerate an O.S. that does not allow them access to all the
features of
their favorite sports sites.
