I have a windows 2003 member server, that was upgraded from
windows
2000 server, that cannot be connected to using remote
desktop. Remote
desktop is enabled on the remote tab of the system page, and
several
users have been added from the administrators group. We have
several
2003 servers in our domain but this is the only one not
functioning as
expected. An interesting tidbit is that "remote
desktop connection" is
missing from the "accessories/communications"
selection window.

Steve,

It sounds like Terminal Services is not installed on this
server. Is it
checkboxed in Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs ->
Windows
Components?

Justin,

I apologize, i can't find the location where it would be
checked. I
found "terminal server" and "terminal
server licensing", both which are
unchecked but they are also unchecked on all of my other
servers except
for 2 used for that purpose.

You're right, Steve. The "Remote Desktop"
option in system properties
should be enough. Can you telnet to port 3389 from the local
server?
I.e. 'telnet localhost 3389'

Do you have the Windows Firewall enabled?

Open a cmd prompt and type: net stop sharedaccess

does it say successfully stopped Windows Firewall...?

if so, retry connecting.

Nice try, but the service wasn't started. I think i might
have found it
though. The registry key for TermServices is pointing to the
windows
2000 prog termserv.exe which doesn't exist anymore, so
tomorrow when
the server's owner is in-house i am going to delete the old
key and
then import a key from one of my working windows 2003
servers. What do
you think?

well that didn't work either, everything is as it was
before except
that now the registry entry for termservices is correct. the
owner of
the box said something about terminal services not
installing correctly
during/following the upgrade from windows 2000, will follow
up.

I just tried to start the "Terminal Services"
service and received the
following:

Could not start the Terminal Services service on Local
Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or
control request
in a timely
fashion.

the msg was instantaneous, so i am assuming the component is
missing or
damaged, is there some way to download and reinstall the
service?

It wouldn't hurt to uninstall Terminal Server from
Add/Remove Programs,
then reinstall it.

is not checked and there is nothing listed for
"terminal services" as
there is in windows 2000 server.

I just observed another oddity with this server. i was using
winmsd to
verify build level and started going through some of the
other tabs, in
software environment under "network connections"
the screen was blank
although there are several and "services" was
also blank which i
wouldn't think is possible if the system is up and running,
which it is
and does quite well except for "remote desktop".

Some progress. i uninstalled and reinstalled remote desktop.
i can now
remote desktop out using tsmmc.msc and i can now use
tscc.msc. when i
am in tscc and click on server settings the licensing policy
that
should say "remote desktop for administration"
is missing, i do have
the other 5 policies though.

a little more info. when looking at the properties for the
RDP-Tcp
connection, the permissions state they are read only and
can't be
changed, there are instructions using gpedit.msc to modify
the policy
but when this is done the permissions still aren't
viewable.
