I thought I had it resolved but in the middle It stopes with
a diaolg
box titled New Credentials. The contents are

The operation failed because: A domain controller could not
be
contacted for the domain levy.lan that contained an account
for this
computer.
Make the computer a member of a workgroup then rejoin the
domain
before retrying the promotion.
  "Access is denied."

I tried using the username adminstrator and the admin
password for
server1 but it doesn't work

Vikram,

Can you be more assertive about your suggestions? In this
case, for
example, could you specify the technical term for
"restoration mode",
where to find it, and maybe a link pointing to a website
that offers
further insight?

My guess is you mean pressing F8 on boot and select
Directory Services
Restore mode. I'm pretty sure that's what you mean, but your
post could
be mistaken for a few other things like System Restore or
NTBackup
Restore Wizard. It's just not clear.

Besides boosting your effectiveness as an adviser, there's a
real
opportunity to serve people here and (as in my case) even an
opportunity to further your own grasp on the technology.

Thanks,
Justin
