Thread: Domain vs "this computer"

Domain vs "this computer"

Hello again,

I am tasked with installing Apache, mySQL, and whole basket
full of
executables on many servers. One machine has a third line in
the logon
window, "Log on to:". There are two choices
dzNet, and southBldg(this
computer). I think dzNet is a domain login and southBldg is
just for
the computer. I use the same admin ID and password for both
but only
dzNet has shutdown/restart options. So it seems the domain
has a
larger scope or presence than the computer.

I am not sure what the difference is and since the computer
will be
operating in a network I wonder if it makes a difference how
I am
logged in when installing.

Thanx,

jh

Two differences that I would consider, jh.

First is authentication. When you try to access certain
resources on
your local network, your computer will try to authenticate
against a
domain user. In your first option (dzNet), when you request
access to
say a domain file share, your machine will authenticate you
as "dzNet
username" and the password for that account. In your
second option
(this computer), it will authenticate you as
"southBldgusername" and
the password for that account. Even though you are using the
same
username and password values for each account, they are in
fact two
different user accounts.

Second, any server(s) you logon to with these two different
user
accounts will have its own user profile. So you logon to
dzNet and
begin customizing your Windows experience. Any per-user
setting
changes, as well as My Documents, Favorites, and Desktop
changes won't
show on the southBldg logon.

As far as shutdown/restart, there is a policy settings that
allows
specific user groups to shut down the machine. You are
probably
observing the effects of that policy.
