100% CPU utilization by Windows XP automatic updates

This post is slightly off topic, but anybody administering
Windows
2003 (on a small scale, at least) is sure to be
troubleshooting
Windows XP issues as well.

That said, the Automatic Update service (WUAUSERV) has been
a thorn in
many people's side as of late. Using up CPU cycles like
crazy, often
100% utilization, and making computers generally unstable.
This is
especially the case with older, non dual-core machines. If
you see
SVCHOST using all of your CPU, you can probably bet your
buttons the
Automatic Updates service is the culprit.

Anyways, Microsoft has published an updated version of the
Windows
Update Agent that seems to have done the trick for me. Both
the
Automatic Update service AND the Microsoft Update website
run faster
on tangibly less CPU cycles.

If you're interested, give it a try. They don't have a
download page
yet, just download links.
