Hello,

I currently have a Windows 2003 server standard edition installed on a Dell PowerEdge 850.

The server has a PCI RAID controller card, and there is hardware RAID level 1 (two SATA drives are mirrored).

This server also has a PCI Express slot. There are no other slots in this server, nor is there any room for more.

The Problem:

I need to use the PCI slot for something else. So, I would like to install a RAID controller card in the PCI Express slot and have the operating system there.

I bought an Adaptec PCI Express RAID controller card, and configured hardware RAID level 1 on it (again two SATA drives, which are larger then the existing drives).

I thought I could clone the original drives to the ones on the PCI Express controller, remove the PCI controller, and boot the system. However, I have been unsuccessful.

The problem does not stem from a misconfigured boot.ini.

I have tried various cloning software without success. I even tried using Windows mirroring to “clone” the original hard drive, but Windows will only mirror Windows partitions.

One of the problems is that the original disk has an EISA partition, so the O/S is installed on the second partition.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Mark,

You could always do a complete backup of your current system
using
backup software, do a fresh install onto the new raid
controller, and
then do a restore of the backed up information.

RAID is tricky cloning onto a HAL

Have you tried Acronis True Image with Universal Restore. Using boot media, image system to network share. Remove existing disks and put other disks in place. Again using boot media restore image to new disks, use Universal restore to install any needed drivers for new controller (they slipstream in with image restore process). I have done this a bunch of times, even different hardware with Universal Restore.

Another thing that works well for this application is
Symantec System
Restore (formally Livestate Recovery). Takes a full image of
the hard
drive within the OS, no booting to a disk or image, and then
can be
restored. Works great for disaster recovery as well as hard
drive
moves such as this.

Do you have to necessarily replace those existing drives?
Depending on
how the original controller works, you might be able to get
away with
simply plugging one of the original drives into the new
controller.
This should be after, of course, booting to the original
setup (with
the new controller in place) and providing the appropriate
drivers.
