I tried to send a message to the email address in the man
page for 
em(4).  And it bounced.  Whom is the real author?

Your best bet is to send to jfvfreebsd.org
as he's the last one to make changes to the driver:

It looks like the last commit made to if_em.c
may fix the reversal though it's not yet been MFC'd to 6/7.
