Yes, I'm sure the 80 port is OK - that's how I connect
with the web browser and Google Talk. Manual
connection reported success:

HTTP/1.0 200 Connection established
Proxy-Agent: NetCache NetApp/6.0.6P1D4

And after a few seconds "Connection to host lost"
ending the telnet session. But this manual connection
lasts longer than it takes to see the errors in xmpppy
connection.
