Group article summaries by date

Hello,

Its been a while since I posted on here. I'm trying to set
up a new site 
with xaraya and am writing the theme. I would like to
achieve the effect 
you can see on http:/
/eyptest.drphilth.com/teachers/news.html for the 
news article part of the site - instead of having a splash
page with all 
the news links and then a separate page for each article,
I'd like to 
combine them on one. I realise this means a couple of
override templates 
for the articles module in my theme (specifically
user-view-news.xt and 
user-display-news.xt).

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of
some docs 
or any ideas for grouping the summaries by date - I cant be
the first 
person to have tried this, but my searching so far has come
up blank. I 
think I can get the rest together by borrowing from the
featured article 
or topitems blocks.

If this isn't the right place to post theme related
questions, please, 
accept my apologies, and feel free to nudge me in the right
direction.
