overriding left.xt for a single page instance in a single module?

hi all,

i've set up a custom/standalone login page, using
module=roles,
user-showloginform.xt override and and a customized login.xt
block.

its displayed in the right column of a header+2col layout.
left column
displays menus, as currently defined in theme's default.xt.

for the single instance of this login screen i'd like to
override the
content of the left col -- i.e., show no menus there, but
rather
anything else, e.g. a picture + text.

i presume i can mod left.xt 'higher up' in the local
theme's BL
hierarchy with a xar:if conditional for module=roles, but
that seems a
little clunky. is that the right approach in xar BL-land?

given my BL understanding at the time, i'd tried simply
creating a
left.xt instance as:

	themes/myTheme/modules/roles/blocks/left.xt

but that went nowhere -- i'm guessing that you can't
"override" a block
definition for a module if the globally defined modules
doesn't
define/use the block in the first place ... &, afaict,
roles has no
left.xt ...

so, QUESTION:

where vest to override the left block content for JUST this
one
page/instance ?

thx again!

richard

( ... as the granularity of my tweaks keeps getting
'finer', the real
flexibility of xar is starting to shine thru )
