Thread: Boot Mac without a video card

Boot Mac without a video card

Hi,

I have linux happily running a dedicated web/DNS/DHCP
server, and I
was wondering if I could boot the Mac without the video card
(as I
wish to use it elsewhere.) Does anyone have any advice,
knowledge,
or mere speculation on the matter?

Thank you,
Andy Zschetzsche

What machine is it ... YMMV. Some probably will, others
might not...

After some more testing, it appears that the hardware and
firmware
will allow the computer to boot, however, it appears to get
stuck in
the yaboot process, or in the very early stages of loading
the
kernel. Anyone still have any advice?

Thanks

So it does boot with a monitor but not without?

Hmm. Are you trying to run the computer without a _video
card_?

I'm running a Beige G3 (officially unsupported) headless,
and, AFAIK
all Macs should be able to _run_ headless (some machines
require a
monitor to allow you to install YDL in the first place,
however). I
also run the Beige G3 without its AV personality card. This
means it
can't generate any sounds (which is why I did it and
should draw a
few Watts less of electricity (ugh, the grammar seems
awkward but not
necessarily wrong).

Eric.

Yes, I am trying to run the computer _without_ a _video
card_.

As such, there would be no monitor (because there would be
no video
card...)

The machine is already running headless (to be specific: no

monitor). With or without a monitor, it boots fine.

The idea is to put the video card (it's a PCI card) into
another Mac
to drive a second display. (Poor 3D, no Quartz Extreme, but
it would
get the job done.)

I know many people operate computers without a monitor, but
am I the
only one who would like to remove the _video card_?

Oh, and how about "... and should draw a few less Watts
of
electricity ..."?

Thanks
Andy Zschetzsche
