Zend_Search_Lucene Storage Private Properties

Hello,
In Zend_Search_Lucene_Storage_File_Filesystem and 
Zend_Search_Lucene_Storage_Directory_Filesystem, the
properties are private.  
Is there a reason for this?  It makes extending these two
classes quite 
tedious, especially when I only need to change one method!
