I am still researching whether high levels of mg supplementation is OK.
There is evidence that mag and calcium DO compete for intestinal
absorption, but levels up to 1600mg a day are OK as long as you
supplement with calcium as well - at around 50% so 2 mag: 1 ca.

Type in 'magnesium competes with calcium' into the internet to find out
more.

I am on 750mgs a day, split into three doses. I don't take supplemental
calcium because it constipates me. I'm not too worried though. I have a
good, low acid (little meat or dairy) diet so I think my bones are OK.
I may get a bone density test to check though.

I am more worried about giving my 5 yo 20mls of MOM a day though, which
is what he needs to not re-tear. I have therefore recently switched him
to 14g of Miralax a day and 10mls of MOM (around 300mg of oxide). It
seems to be working so far though it seems to take a LOT of Miralax to
replace one 10ml dose of MOM.

Anyone else have experience of trying both?
