Howdy folks.
I'm new to the group, and I tell ya, it's been very enlightening reading
the posts here. It's also good to know I'm not the only one out there.
Anyway, I though it might be interesting if people could post how long
they've had to deal with their fissure.
I've had mine since Dec, 2006. I've gotten them for years, but, until
this one, they healed on their own within a week or two. This one is
just ridiculous. I had the botox treatment back in April, but it didn't
do much good. I started to improve significantly in July, when I
finally had no pain for more than a day or two. But the past 6 weeks or
so has just been a succession of calm periods, followed by a relapse.
The next step for my doc is a sphincterotomy, but I'm not willing to
throw in the towel yet. I'm going to look into PT next, with a big
thanks to Nel for raising the topic. I had never heard about it before,
but if your (ie, my) problem is that you're too literally a tight-ass [
], training yourself to loosen up is the most logical way to go,
seems to me.
But, back to my question:
How long have you had yours?

I had my fissure diagnosed in early May, 2005 but in my own mind, I wonder if what I always thought was a "hemorrhoid flare-up" had really been on again/ off again fissures for 30+ years. Luckily I was able to avoid surgery even though I had pretty extreme pain for much of the spring and summer of 2005. Nowadays I eat a lot of high fiber cereals and take a fake Collace daily, and KNOCK ON WOOD, although I would never call myself "cured" I have been mostly symptom-free for about two years. Good Luck--

Welcome Mario,
How long have I had a fissure? At least 12 months and I suspect some
months before that. My doctor gave me hydrocortisone cream 3-4 times
a day for two years which was the worst thing he could do for any
ailment I am familar with. I was diagnosed (general surgeon) about
the first of February 2007, but he agreed it had been there for
months. He prescribed hydrocortisone suppositories. The pain was so
bad I could not use them.
I started doing research on the internet and found several tests on
nifedipine that looked good. It took me and my compounding pharmisist
about a month to talk him into letting me try it. Since that he has
prescribed it to over 25 patients and told a lot of other doctors
about it. I also found this site which has been a God send. There are
some wonderful people here as well as a competent, caring doctor.
I am much better, but I still have my setbacks. Usually when I go out
a lot where I am unable to find a toilet I am willing to go into.
This throws me off schedule, and I usually suffer from that and have
to work my way back.
I recommend nifedipine. It may or may not cure it, but it should give
you some relief while you search for a solution.
Good luck,
Don

Hello Mario,
I had my first fissure experience Nov. 2000. Had LIS in Jan 2001 and healed fine. The second one from hell came April 2005 and still battling it. Have had 3 rounds of Botox, fistulotomy, exam under anesthesia with med injection most recently and now facing another surgery September. So...2 and 1/2 years for this one? I believe that most of my tightness, tears are related to scar tissue from hemmerhoidectomy done Oct. 2000.

I had my first one for at least 6 months before I even talked to a
doctor about the pain and blood. Healed up within a couple of months
with conservative therapy (mineral oil, metamucil). I was fine for 15
years. Then had some roids banded and went down hill from there. The
fissures showed up within weeks of the banding. Went for 4 months
using nitro before I had LIS.
