The College of William and Mary is once again hosting the William and Mary
Sports Medicine Workshop--a summer camp for high school students interested
in careers in athletic training and sports medicine. We are excited to
announce our renewed relationship with Cramer Products, which will provide
our workshop participants AND their respective schools and supervising ATC's
free merchandise and valuable discounts:

-- Every school will receive a free case of Cramer athletic tape for each of
its students who attend the workshop.
-- Schools who have three or more students at the workshop will receive a
new Cramer Gold Series Athletic Training Kit for the supervising ATC.
-- Every participant will receive a catalog and special discount to purchase
merchandise.
-- Participants will have the opportunity to win valuable Cramer merchandise
through workshop games and contests.

The William and Mary Sports Medicine Workshop is an intensive four day
curriculum designed to introduce high school students to the exciting field
of sports medicine. At the core of the workshop is the American Red Cross
Adult CPR course in which participants will learn vital life-saving skills
and complete their CPR certification. Depending on their experience and
skill level, participants can choose either the Basic Track or Advanced
Track to enhance their knowledge in sports medicine. Participants will stay
in the dormitory and eat their meals in the campus dining facility.

The Basic Track curriculum includes taping and wrapping, injury prevention
techniques, introduction to rehabilitation, emergency care skills, and basic
injury recognition.

The Advanced Track is designed for students who have attended a basic
workshop and/or have extensive experience under the supervision of their
athletic trainer at their school. The Advanced curriculum includes a visit
to the cadaver anatomy lab, a seminar on sports medicine careers and
choosing the right college, a trip to the pool for an introduction to
aquatic therapy, and labs on advanced taping and wrapping.

Please visit our web site for an application, more information, and photos
from the previous workshops at htt://www.wm.edu/sportsmedicine/sportsmedcamp.htm.

My physician informed me that the Physician and Sportsmedicine journal is no longer available - especially online. What's worse is that you can't access any of the back issues online either. Is McGraw-Hill Publisher still publishing this journal or is another publisher taking over? Will it be available online?

Donald--

My administrative assistant tried to renew my subscription in early January and was told that the company was selling the magazine. She was not given any information about the continuation of the magazine, but that was the reason we were told why we can't renew.

I called the journal last week to subscribe. McGraw-Hill sold their
publishing rights to another smaller company. I called the company and
the representative informed me that they are not currently taking new
subscriptions, as they are trying to decide if they will publish the
journal or sell it to yet another publishing company. To say the least,
the journal is in a holding pattern .

For those with appropriate ProQuest access, it is indexed back to 1989 in
the ProQuest system of databases, probably including Periodical Abstracts
and one may use WorldCat from First Search to find libraries in ones
region that subscribe to the journal to go to those libraries and find the
journal. If the libraries you have membership in do not subscribe to
First Search, one may go to Google and perform this search to find
libraries in their area that subscribe.

Since starting this message, I have found the posts on the
athletic_training_education list and have read with great interest about
the journal being sold, not taking on new subscribers and being possibly
up for sale again by the new owners. The online world and corporate
ownership of publications have certainly led to journal du jour and
database du jour kinds of situations in the field of publications. My
favorite story in this arena is the weekend Lexis Nexis some years ago
dropped around 300 business periodicals if memory serves me correctly.

I hope that the information above will be helpful to the members of this
discussion group.

The Online Assessment of Athletic Training Education (OAATE) web site is now available. The system is designed for athletic training students in their last year of the ATEP to assess their content knowledge and for program administrators to get feedback on program satisfaction/importance. While this is a research project, there is no charge for the service that this system provides. Program administrators are able to use this system year after year to track trends and measure the effects of interventions and improvements. A variety of reports are available to the students and the administrators. Many students are preparing for the upcoming certification exam, this system can act as a mock written exam – however, it is not a predictor of success on the exam. ; Please take a moment to follow this link to learn more about the system.

Colleagues and Friends of AT:

Please see details of the sudden and sad loss of one of our ATEP faculty
and clinical instructors this week. For any of you that didn't know Mark
Alderman, he was a complete professional and a wonderful man that many
people will miss dearly.

For those of you interested, the necessary information for donating in
Mark's name are included at the end. At this point, our (ATEP) plan is
to establish some kind of scholarship in Mark's name; an award that we
hope to give to a graduating senior AT major that embodies Mark's
character and personality. We will forward details to you when we have
them, but we need to speak with Mark's family first before doing anything.

Please forward this email to any appropriate people that you know. ;
Thank You.

Do NOT reply back to this listserv.

/Obituary/
*MARK H. ALDERMAN*
Mark H. Alderman, 48, of Danby Road, Ithaca, died unexpectedly on
Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Cayuga Medical Center. He was born on April
10, 1957 in Lockport, NY, son of Richard and Geraldine Howard Alderman,
who survive him.

Mark was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sport Sciences
at Ithaca College. He received his B.S. in Health, Physical Education,
and Recreation from Messiah College and his M.S. in Physical Education
with a concentration in athletic training from Indiana State University.

Central to Mark's life was his strong and abiding faith in God,
demonstrated in practical acts of service and kindness, generously
bestowed on family, church, colleagues, and community. Though we grieve
for his absence from us, we rejoice that Mark has finished the race and
received the goal of his faith, eternal life in Jesus Christ.

In addition to his parents, Mark is survived by his wife, Gayle and
their children, Brianne, Kelsey, Ethan and Tessa. He is also survived by
his four sisters, Karen (Bruce) Bossard, Carol (George) Griesedieck,
Cheryl (Carlos) Martinez, Diane (Kevin Seamen) Alderman; and his
brother, Stephen (Kara) Alderman.

A service of thanksgiving for the life of Mark Alderman will be held at
Bethel Grove Bible Church on Saturday, April 8, at 11:00 a.m. with
Reverend David M. Jones and Reverend R. Lewis Rinard officiating. A
reception will follow in the church building. Private interment will
take place in Danby Rural Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In
lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to benefit Mark's children.
Donations may be made out to the Tompkins Trust Co., f/b/o the children
of Mark Alderman and mailed to Tompkins Trust Co., c/o Rich Dolge, PO
Box 460 The Commons, Ithaca, NY 14851, or may be dropped at any bank
office, or donations may be made to a fund in Mark's memory at Bethel
Grove Bible Church, 1763 Slaterville Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850. Arrangements
are by the Bangs Funeral Home.

The clinical instructors and ACIs have a lot of responsibilities between
their patients, sport(s), and athletic training students. In addition
to their responsibilities with their full-time job (i.e., athletics,
clinic), AT programs as asking these individuals to take on the
responsibilities of teaching and evaluating skills of 1-8 AT students.
At our institution, we don't compensate any of the ACIs on- or
off-campus. Nor do other health professions programs (PT, OT, PA, NM,
SC) at our institution pay their clinical instructors. We do provide
CEU opportunities for ACIs, but do not actually pay them a specific
stipend or salary to be an ACI.

I would like to hear how other schools deal with this issue. What are
some of the thoughts or feelings from administrators and ACIs? ; Please
reply to the listserv. Thank you for your time.

We currently have 3 ACIs that are 1/4 time academic (6 semester
hours/year) and 3/4 athletics. I actually assign each of the ACIs one
or two Clinical Experience courses as part of their load and one
didactic course per year. ; The Clinical Experience course(s) and the
one didactic course together add up to 6 semester hours per year.
That is how our on-campus ACIs get paid. ; We currently have no
off-campus ACIs, just CIs who are not paid (other than the Medical
Director who is paid via contract).
