This is one of those situations where academia continues to push many of us from the belief of generalists to specialists. It has happened in PE with the focus of many on specific aspects within: Exer. Phys., Kinesiology, Biomechanics, etc. Instead of having individuals who can teach a variety of subjects, higher education, specifically, the accrediting agencies, is now requiring specialists in each field. This requires typically a minimum of 18 post graduate credit hours in a specific content area (i.e.. master's in AT) Even a political science doctorate cannot teach a history class unless he has 18 post graduate hours in history. We began a discussion at the last educator's conference regarding advanced master's degrees, we've had discussions on the list serve regarding doctorates and subject content. Whether for or against, SACs and other accrediting agencies of academia will probably make these decisions for us.
