I've found that scanning isn't necessairly the best approach. Try mounting the x-ray on a view box (or even to a window) and then shooting it w/ a digital  camera. Depending on the body part, the best results are seen with the viewer's  light off. Photoshop can be used to adjust the brightness/contrast for the best  image.
