I think it is: it's a difference of degree, not of kind.

You're defining, personally, what you find valuable. That
can be some
concrete like a sunroof or something ethereal like a
principle.

Some principles (or features) are so valuable that you've
decided not to
live without them. Other's are "nice to haves".
Any decision is a balance
between what you value and what you don't. We prioritize
these things and
make compromised decisions.

For example:

Racism is a negative to me. If introduced to a racist
person I would not be
friendly to them. However I tolerate my grandmother's
racism (or at least I
do much more than I would a stranger's). This doesn't mean
that I approve
of racism but rather that I'm willing to forgive my
grandmother this obvious
fault since I value family loyalty and her more.

Poor gas mileage is a negative to me. If shopping for a car
I would steer
clear of those with bad mileage. However if I won a car
with bad mileage in
a contest I would probably keep it. I value a free car more
than I dislike
bad mileage.

Of course this doesn't mean that I consider gas mileage as
important a topic
as racism: but I use the same logical system to make
decisions based on
them. Again, it's a difference of degree, not of kind.

BTW - what about the Girl Scouts? Are they to be shunned as
well?
Cause I love Girl Scout cookies.

Sometimes degree can define the boundary of kind.

You're *not* just defining one or more attributes that you
personally find
valuable; you're making a public claim *about the value of a
people,*
whether you intend to or not. It's how they take it, not
how you mean it.

And though you didn't mean to offend by using gas mileage as
an analogy, it
is very offensive to many that you would do so. You
trivialized an entire
people, though I'm sure you would never intend to do so.
But again, it
isn't how you mean it; it's how they take it.

BTW, if family loyalty means more to you than the principle
of human
equality, and if your family's behavior forces your hand,
then I'd say you
really ought to have a long talk with yourself (and perhaps
one or more of
your family members).

Does family loyalty mean more to you than, say, murder? If
your brother
murdered someone, would you not tell the authorities? Would
you actively
lie to protect him? Help dispose of the body? Just how far
would you be
willing to swing in the balance between family loyalty and
basic human
principles?

Do you have any idea how far down the wrong path this kind
of thinking can
take you?

Respectfully,
