Off the top of my head, without many specifics, I would say
Gibson,
Stephenson, Drake, Sterling, Brin, Vernor and Barnes, Moon
and Weber are
holding up their own.
I don't always _like_ the inventions when I first read about
them (the
Gargoyles from Snow Crash for example), but over time, they
seem less
freakish, and more possible.
Imagine a wearable video camera, hd quality, mounted to a
camera person's
shoulder or head, that pointed where wanted, with hand
controls to zoom and
pan, steadycam built in, and an eyepiece (semitransparent)
for monitoring.
I would way prefer this to the huge shoulder mounted cameras
I see all over
Boston as I move around. The big cameras AFFECT the story in
some ways. And
they are too big to be everywhere. The gargoyles are the
farthest push of
this idea I have seen. The reporter in a Steve Perry book
(maybe 97th step)
was a lesser but far out version as well.
So, yes, I think we still have long distance thinkers.
