Carnac was from Johnny Carson right? Waaay back? ) and I
worked at
Kodak from like '92ish to Jan 98ish with a 2 year break in
the middle..
when or who did what when, I've no clue. But it does say
they went back to
being good guys... I don't mean to sound flippant or
all-knowing? That's
what I come to this list for? Because it does have people
that know 'stuff'?
But I figure if Kodak guards it's million dollar lawsuits
on Verbatim disks?
And Fred guards his career with it, it out to be good enough
for little ol'
me? As for the 'one of the 15'? I don't buy the cheapest
burners nor do I
buy the most expensive. Heck I don't even have a DL burner
yet. And probably
won't.
And thanks for the info...would you believe I looked at both
of those links
and couldn't find Verbatim anywhere? Duhh. Didn't do a
search. But
still. ))
Thanks again,
Bruce

Did Verbatim switch to an inferior product before or after
Carnac at Kodak
carved their required media brand in stone ?

Ok, I didn't think there was such an
animal...but...reread.... She didn't
buy any disks. I was in the store looking at the disks for
her. On the side
or end of the package. Right next to where it says DVD DL R+
it also shows
the RW symbol plain as day? That's what confused me...
As for the Cadillac.. I don't need more info, I don't care
if Abbot and
Costello make it? As long as they make it to the proper
standards? All I
need is my own experience and 2 references.. When I worked
at Kodak,
Verbatim is all they'd allow us to use? If you got caught
using anything
other than Verbatim, you were in deep whahoo. These people
take data backups
waaay serious. When you deal with imaging and medical
products there's a
whole world of standards that must be met. Not the least of
which is
data/records tracking and backups. If it's good enough for
them outta be
good enough for me? Not to mention, Fred Langa is the one
who coined the
Cadillac term for Verbatim disks?> He says most any of
his disks will do
fine for temporary stuff. But if it's important to him, it
goes on Verbatim
disks. Fred may not know it all, but I think most people
would agree he's a
pretty reliable source.. Again, if it's good enough.....
But thanks for the link, I'll pass it on to Renee, Bruce

No such animal as a DL RW disc.
The media you're looking at will work in a machine capable
of RW, DL, etc,
but the media is limited to Write Once !
I doubt she bought a package of DL discs since they are
still way to
expensive for ordinary use.
Saying Verbatim sells the Cadillac of Disks is like saying
Sears sells the
Cadillac of Socks.
Verbatim discs are manufactured by several different
companies in several
different countries and some work good while others are
junk. You need more
information to make an informed decision on the value of a
disk. This site
has some of the info you need....
http://www.videohel
p.com/dvdmedia
And more essential info here.........
http://w
ww.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
>>>>>>>>>> Who makes the disc:
Brand vs. Media ID
The thing that must be realized is that most media is
produced by a relative
small number of factories, located in several different
places. These
factories are present in Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Mexico,
Hong Kong, India,
and Ireland... maybe a few more, but not many. The best
media generally
comes from Japan and Singapore. The worst typically comes
from Taiwan (in
stores) and Hong Kong (online).
This being said, understand that the media brands means
nothing. Apple is a
great brand, but they do not make their own discs, instead
outsourcing to
MXL (Hitachi/Maxell), MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals), and PVC
(Pioneer).
Verbatim became infamous by switching from high-quality MCC
to ultra-cheap
CMC (CMC Magnetics) media, although they have since returned
to using MCC.
Companies like Memorex, Fuji and Imation all outsource to
media vendors.
When buying media online always be aware of fake media too
(see the fakes
guide).
It is the Media ID that is important, as it reveals the disc
maker.

Hi guys...at the risk of asking a stupid question... I was
checking out the
DVD Dl +R disks for the girl that I just did the data
recovery for. She
bought a DVD DL drive. I thought the DL disks were Write
once disks? On the
package they're labeled DVD DL +R but it also shows the RW
logo right next
to it? That's a little confusing anyone wanna set me
straight, I can find no
mention of DL disks being RWs, But the package is a little
misleading at
best, and this was Verbatim disks which are pretty much the
Cadillac of
Disks in my ever so humble opinion. ))
Btw, the recovery went pretty well, I used Disk Internals
NTFS recovery, Not
necessarily the tool I would recommend because it's pretty
much just point,
click wait and recover. It doesn't give you much if any
options..but it
worked fine for this purpose.

The prices of DL discs has dropped drastically, as well as
the 16x discs.
Wait till the new burners come out that holds 50gb. Talk
about expensive!
