Subject: [CTS] XP Admin login issue
Does anyone have any ideas?
Hello, it's
nice to meet you. I am a technician at the Association f/t Blind in Perth
Western Australia. I have a problem with a clients machine I was hoping you
could help me with. I have tried everything I know but cannot solve the
problem and haven't been able to find any help on Microsofts web site or
anywhere else on the net.
The client has a normal PC with XP Home
edition on it. She turned her computer on and instead of automatically
logging in as normal she was asked to logon. She couldn't get in at all. I
tried to get in as administrator in safe mode and received an error message
that it couldn't log me in due to policy restrictions. Now I know
this restriction is in place when logging in as admin in normal mode but
I should be able to get in in safe mode shouldn't I? I found a
linux utility on a boot disk that was able to give me some information.
It told me the administrator password was blank and that the only
other account is a disabled guest account. It would appear that her
account has been wiped. I took the hard drive and put it into my work
machine and ran Sophos antivirus over the disk. It picked up two nasties
it reported as bugbear and bagle. From what I could see on their web
site neither of these should cause this problem. I have tried to get
some help from Experts Exchange http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21794647.html but no answer to my last message from quite a few
days ago now.
My question is this: If I can use this Linux utility to
change registry entries, do you know where in the registry I could go to
change this policy setting so I can get in as admin? At least then I could
make a new account for her and she wouldn't lose all her settings and so on.
It appears that if I can't do this I will have to reformat and I
really don't want to unless I have to.
Thank you in advance for any
help you can provide.
