Hal's right about being a BIG difference, right down to
specific cd/dvd drives they will accept, screens, etc. First
of all what model Dell is it, I might have (or can get) a
service manual for that model and find out why the second
slot requires service center...might be that it's under the
keyboard or they may have soldered on memory and 2 or more
variants of the mainboard/system board with different
soldered on amounts. If it's just that the machine has to
be opened for the additional then I can do that for you
cheaply with a ship and return system.
I do a "few" laptops a day at work, generally 25
in a shift. The Quantex Hal gave me a while back (now my
son's for college) and my Quantex PIII based 15"
laptop are the same as Dell Inspiron models and I've done a
lot of Dells in the past 5 yrs. Not self employed since Jan
1 but I still rework for people I know. Most are made by one
of 3 sources anyway just with differences in plastics and of
course nameplates. Compal is one of the major makers of the
guts for most laptops.
Knowing the model too I can see what the max is that your
machine will take per DIMM slot.
