Just got Cable Modem Internet installed and this is one of
the tests I
have run/ran, This is about half of what the top speed is
"suppose" to
be (9mbps). Now I know practically no one will actually get
to the top
speed, but I was expecting to be somewhat, or a LOT closer
than this.
:-O Any thoughts? Other than that, it's WAY faster than
the DSL I was
using!

I've actually gotten above (5.1, 5.2MBps) what my ISP
(mchsi.com)
tells us the max is (5MBps).
Maybe try a larger test. http://www.speake
asy.net/speedtest/ works
fairly well, and apparently my connection is horrible at the
moment--
good to know!
The way I actually prefer to test my speeds is usenet...find
some
random alt.binaries.* group (I'm, of course, speaking of
those
offering legal downloads -- stuff that's freely
redistributed) and
start downloading a large file and check the speed. I'm
guessing OE
isn't the best choice of an nntp client for speed testing,
NewzBin
(www.newzbin.com) is good.
Depending on the server, nntp might not be the most
reliable. I have
a subscription to Easynews so I can download from them
rather than
using Mediacom's news servers, which are (1) likely to be
faster than
a random one and (2) much slower than a random one.

The best one I have found is: http://www.testmy.net/
The speakeasy has been down most of the day. Well, at least
from my end.
<shrug> Even still, I'm not getting NO WHERE near the
speed I am paying
for, :-O
Wonder how much an OC3 line cost.....
I'll probably go that route at the same time I buy that
5.6TB RAID
doohicky!

| Video Editing Hardware + Software |

|
2006-05-15 11:35:45 |
|
Good Morning...
Looking for a Recommendation...
I just bought an Adaptec Vide-Oh! Video Editing "widget" and it came with something called Sonic "My DVD" video Editing software. I dumped a VHS Tape yesterday (about an hour) and the quality seemed much better than the piece-o-crap Dazzle that I had taken back to the store earlier after "dumping" the same tape. The resolution on this was very good (720x480, i think)..but the software crashed and I ended up losing it somewhere along the lines.
Here's Cnet.com's reviews of it: http://reviews.cnet.com/VIDEO_CREATOR_DVD_USB_KIT_EXT_USB_BOX_DVD_S_W/4505-9332_7-20273515.html
So...my question is this: With my 1.0GHz system, 512MB of Ram and 40+80GB of HD space...i think i've got enough to at least start with until I can afford to upgrade the computer...but I want to make sure
that the software is gonna be decent. I went with this because it supports that 800-1200Mhz range of PC...at least on the box it does. There was another one that was recommended to me at the store, but the requirements were MINIMUM 1.4GHz...and since i'm missing that ".4" GHz...this seemed the better route to go than the expense of MB, CPU, and new RAM.
Anyone have any experience with this or what might be a better software package to go with since the one that comes with it gets "mixed reviews"?
Thanks...

Does anybody know how that's actually calculated? For most
software,
it seems completely arbitrary--more a took to get people to
upgrade
their systems to get the latest and greatest software that
would run
on the existing hardware.
For instance, MS Office doesn't need much, it'll run as
well as any
other software on a slow system; it won't run at desirable
levels,
but it'll work.
Video editing software won't quite run on a 400mhz (crawl,
maybe) but
I'm guessing that 1.0 vs 1.4 won't make a difference at
all. Of
course, don't go buying it based on my guess--I have been
wrong once
or twice (but not three!).

There's not really that much difference but the biggest
thing someone
can do if they are doing any video work is get the FASTEST
cpu AND
memory they can afford. The more (memory) the merrier!
