several issues

I offered to help my dad build up a bare box.
it originally came loaded with linspire & i promptly
removed that
installing XP at his request.
First issue: getting the system to detect the cd-rw drive
that I put in
from his old box.
The system detects the drive that was preinstalled, but
nothing I have
connected after purchase.
Second issue: getting the system to detect the 3.5 floppy
drive I also
drug over from the old unit. (I'm sure they are both fixed
with the
same technique).
Third issue: linking the old harddrive as a slave (ran on
98, old as
dirt) without creating the 'boot error' that I get when I
piggy back it
on the secondary plug to the main harddrive (preinstalled in
the box)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm on the hook with
this one.

Couple of things.... Have you enable the optical and floppy
in BIOS?
Have you checked to make sure that the old drive is not set
to master?
Additionally, If XP is in NTFS then the 98 drive may not
show up when
you do get into windows...
