I had simular problem with my burner about a month after I
got it, I
went to TDK's website and found that there was flash for the
frimware
inside the drive... Of course you could have different
problem, but
after you check what dentist says, look for an updated
driver....

It does indeed sound like a firmware issue. Also, according
to this
page in Microsoft's Knowledge Base:
http://support
.microsoft.com/kb/310123 you should try uninstalling the
driver in device manager and then using the "scan for
hardware changes"
to reinstall it.
Of course, if you're having a driver issue with a CD drive
(and if it's
your only CD drive) you should be VERY careful. After
uninstalling the
driver for your optical drive, if you have to then load a
driver for
the optical drive from a CD, you're obviously screwed.
Be sure you have whatever special drivers your optical drive
needs
before following that KB article. Most DVD driver do
require a
third-party driver in XP, so you may want to look around on
the net
(using Google, of course) and get copies of those drivers in
advance.

Reading your tip about getting drivers off the CD when you
have no
drivers for the CD ROM Tack... If you forget to save it to
your
computer first, go to your nieghbors and pull the file off
the CD (they
ussually aren't that big) and Email it to yourself... As you
can tell,
I've run into this problem before...

Yeah Matt, good point. You can also just stick the CD in
another
computer on your network and share that folder.
However, with some newer systems (and even some older ones)
windows XP
doesn't have the drivers needed - rarely for wired network
cards, and
pretty often for wifi cards. If those drivers are on a CD,
then you're
screwed, because you can't get a network connection to get
them from
email.
I have run into THAT problem before with a copy of Ubuntu
linux, which
had very little wifi support at the time. It was a catch 22
situation
- I had no wifi so I couldn't get the wifi drivers, and my
DVD-RW had
broken. (Don't ask. It was the motor that moves the reader
lens back
and fourth. I got lucky and fixed it long enough to get
Ubuntu to
install, but couldn't do anything after that.)
Also, if you have this issue with a dual CD-and-Network
driver failure,
one small piece of advice: buy a flash drive. It'll save
your ass in
this situation.
Personally, I swapped it out for another CD drive since we
have two
Compaq laptops in the R3000 series. Even now, the drive
doesn't work
in that other laptop.
