There are lots and lots of reasons why your computer might
be slow. The
most usual one is you have too many programs running in the
background.
Press Control+Alt+Delete to go to the task manager and make
a note of
how many processes are running (bottom left). Anything over
50-60 means
you are running way too much. Go to the performance tab and
take a look
at your CPU usage. Should be 0-5% if you have no active
applications
running. Look at the Physical Memory Total and Available.
How much RAM
do you have? You may need to upgrade if your available
memory is too
little. For Windows XP minimum recommended is 512.
If you have too many programs lined up next to your clock,
you may need
to disable some of them. For a comprehensive guide on how to
do that,
read this article from Tom's Hardware -

puter/
It features a few very good tips.
As a general rule, run as little background programs as you
need. For
example, I have my antivirus, laptop power management, and
anti-malware
software and my computer is at its maximum potential. Any
programs such
as iPod Helper, Quick Time, Java Scheduler, Acrobat Tray,
Adobe Speed
Launcher, etc are disabled from startup.
And yes, probably you installed some software 3 weeks ago
that would
constantly run in the background. If not, make sure you scan
for
viruses and malware. Hope this speeds up your computer.
Also, please
post more details about your system next time.
Cheers
