AMD uses a different rating system then Intel... Basically
AMD's clock
slower than Intel, but in reality they are much better when
put in a
computer to the test. For example AMD advertises an AMD
Athlon 64
single core 3700+ processor that operates at 2.2GHz for
about $235.
Now here is were it gets a little complicated AMD only
advertises that
it is rated at a 2.2GHz so if your looking for a similar
Intel common
sence tells you to go for a 2.2GHz 64bit processor, but in
reality what
AMD is saying by using the 3700+ in the name of this
processor is that
even though we only standarized it to run at 2.2GHz when we
put this
processor to the test we actually have meet and exceeded
speeds of
3.7GHz (this is were the 3700+ number comes in).

For this reason when your going AMD you tend to get better
bang for the
buck as well as being the processor of choice for those who
like to
overclock their systems. (without getting too into
overclocking;
basically youre going to change your systems hardware
settings to run
faster than what they are supposed to run at, but be warned
if do it
wrong you could possibly melt your processor or just damage
your
system).

Yet they AMD processors the "Overclocker's
dream" because it outbeats
alot of its Intel counterpart. Also, if you follow the news
Intel
tends to lag behind AMD lately because AMD has been doing
good at
getting processors out there that can run faster with less
heat, but
Intel has been catching up and doing a great job to stay
head to head
with AMD.

It is a difficult choice and now that dual core has come out
you really
have a lot to look at. check out this article on low cost
high value
dual core processors from Intel.

P.S. New battle between AMD and Intel is their Quad
processor line look
for big competition from AMD especially because of all the
lawsuits
that AMD is bring to Intel and Microsoft for the dominance
and
allegance in the market.

Excellent job explaining that one, I couldn't have done it
that well.
As he said, AMD's given processor speeds are underclocked
for better
stability and heat/power management. That underclocking
doesn't really
suppress their speeds, though. I generally use the rule that
an AMD
will perform at least as well as an Intel rated 1 GHz
faster, but there
are obviously wide variations in the accuracy of that
between high and
low ends.

I. just to confirm
  i saw few pc's at newegg.com
i selected AMD 64 and then
i kept on filtering by clicking on (3500) (3600) (3700)
(3800) (4000)
For most of the pc's under these categories, the speed is
2.2 GHz. it
is confusing me a lot.

II. incase i buy a pc amd 64(4000) 2.2 GHz, do i need to
overclock(i
JUST heard of it and dont know much about it) in order for
it to work
at >3 Ghz.

III. suppose if i bought it and overclocked it, and then if
the chip
burns, what do i do?
