Hello !

I am new to this forum, but I guess I will be back, as I
just
purchased a Coolscan 9000...

So, I have a new scanner, but I have not been able to use it
yet...
It was damaged in transport, and I had to send it back to
the
factory. Twice.

Now, it's back, but I have a problem with focusing : 120 and
135
films seem to be OK, but scans of mounted slides are blurry
(not just
soft). I tried manual focus, etc... nothing works.

I noticed that, even on unmounted film, the value of
autofocus is 1
or 2, on a scale of 1 to 450. This leads me to believe that
the
focusing range of the lens is not correctly adjusted.

Do you know how I could adjust it ?

I know I could send it back to the factory (it is still
under
warranty), but I also know I'll have to wait several weeks
to get it
back... and it may not function the next time either...

The link you have given is extremely helpful, and I guess I
could
access to the lens mechanism. But how should I adjust the
focusing
range, which I understand to be quite narrow ?

Thanks again !

Dan

Hi Dan,
first question - is the number changing during Auto focus?
If yes and considerably, the tray might be misplaced,
if no - you probably have the same problem as I had,
also after the transportation, the lens is in farest
position
from the sensor and out of contact with the spiral gear.
Reading reports on this, I came to an idea - this
misplacement
can happen if you nod the scanner, for example, put it on
the
ground, on the front panel. If this is the correct idea, the
healing
could (just could) be as simple as to nod it backwards and
switch it
on for a short time, just to let the stepping motor to try
to move
the lens. Otherwise, you will have to disassemble the
scanner heavily
to adjust the lens gears manually.
Pavel.
